Experiencing changes in vision, such as blurriness and eye floaters?

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of vision loss around the world. Of an estimated 285 million people with diabetes mellitus worldwide, approximately one-third have signs of diabetic retinopathy.

Fortunately, there are several steps people with diabetes can take to prevent or minimize vision loss.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

noraml eye and an eye with diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused by high blood sugar levels that damage the small blood vessels clustered within your retina. This leads to swelling or fluid leakage and can result in vision loss and even blindness.

Diabetic retinopathy also raises the risk of retinal detachment and/or glaucoma.

Because the early stages of diabetic retinopathy show no symptoms, many don't realize they have it until the disease has progressed.

If you have diabetes, you are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. To reduce your risk and protect your vision, schedule an eye exam with Innovative Eyecare today.

What Are the Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy?

diabetic-retinopothy-oct-scan

As mentioned above, the early phase of diabetic retinopathy typically shows no symptoms. This is why it's important to have routine eye exams (all the more so if you have diabetes), as your eye doctor can detect diabetic retinopathy in its earlier stages before symptoms become apparent.

Symptoms of proliferative diabetic retinopathy include:
  • Blurred vision
  • Floaters
  • Double vision
  • Near vision problems
  • Seeing dark spots (scotomas)
  • Difficulty seeing at night

What are the Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy?

Non-Proliferative Retinopathy (early stage):
This occurs when small bulges–or microaneurysms–form in blood vessels and can leak fluid into the retina.

Proliferative Retinopathy (later phase):
This refers to abnormal vessel growth and leakage in the retina. This triggers a variety of vision problems such as blurriness, reduced field of vision, and even blindness.

If you have diabetes, Innovative Eyecare in West Oak Hill offers diagnostic tests and treatment options to help preserve your vision. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment outcome.

How Optometrists Diagnose Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Medical history

Your optometrist will ask about your medical history, including diabetes, as well as your family history of eye conditions.

  • Dilated pupil exam

Your optometrist will apply eye drops to dilate the pupils so they can see inside the eye and detect any issues.

  • Fluorescein angiography

This eye test uses a special dye and camera to look at blood flow in the retina and choroid.

  • Optical coherence tomography

This imaging method shows a cross-section of the retina and can indicate whether vessels are leaking fluid into the retina.

How to Treat Diabetic Retinopathy

senior man with diabetic retinopathy

Treatment begins with managing blood sugar levels and diabetes. This means eating a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, and taking whatever diabetes medication has been prescribed.

Other treatments will depend on the stage or severity of the disease. If caught early, only blood sugar management may be necessary.

However, if you're in a more advanced stage of the diseases, treatment options may include:
  • Eye medications. Steroid and Anti-VEGF treatments can stop inflammation and prevent the formation of new blood vessels.
  • Laser surgery. Reduces the proliferation of abnormal blood vessels and swelling in the retina.
  • Vitrectomy. If you have proliferative diabetic retinopathy, you may need an eye surgery called vitrectomy. This procedure removes scar tissue, blood or fluid, and some of the vitreous gel so light rays can better focus on the retina.

It’s been 15 years since I’ve had my eyes checked out so I was a bit apprehensive about going. T... hat being said I had a great visit with Dr. Trinidad! Appointment set up was easy. Very little wait time. And Dr. Trinidad was calming and thorough. Really made it easy, painless, and got all my questions answered to a great detail. Recommend!

Been a customer around 20 years, but this was the first time as a retiree w/o vision insurance. Cami... lle patiently and thoroughly educated me about my many options and found ways to bring down the cost of my glasses. Superb customer care and assistance! They are fortunate to have someone of her caliber on the team and I'm so grateful she helped me!!

I have long been a patient of Dr. Dan McQueen and have always experienced excellent care from Dr. Mc... Queen and Innovative Eyecare, but I wanted to commend his caring staff, especially Monique. I live outside of Austin and needed 2 prescriptions filled for an eye inflammation. Monique spent the better part of the morning assisting me in finding a pharmacy nearby that had both medicines in stock so I did not have to drive to multiple locations. Her initiative and thoughtfulness are so appreciated, I highly recommend Innovative Eyecare.

I have been a customer of Innovative Eyecare now for 2 years, and I have had nothing but GOOD experi... ences every time - from the front desk personnel, to the Optometrist, to the associates helping with picking out my frames. However, I must say that this last visit was TRULY an amazing experience of "good customer service" by Melissa Hernandez. Melissa went out of her way days later to double-check my insurance coverage for my purchase because something didn't seem right to her, and I am SO THANKFUL that she decided to investigate a little further - because it did help with cost for my purchase. To have someone call you days later because they took it upon themselves to ensure that their customer was getting the right price says a lot about the kind of customer service Melissa wants to give to those who come in to Innovative Eyecare! Thanks again to the entire team for always putting on a smile and making me feel welcomed and comfortable every time I visit. Blessings!

It was so easy to get a timely appointment and fill out forms as a new patient, with helpful reminde... rs and resources and onsite team communication along the way. It was very safe (masks, freshly sanitized equipment), and fast BUT it was also very thorough. Dr. McQueen and the team were incredibly helpful explaining each step of the exam, what to keep in mind / look out for in general with eye health, and walking through options for contact lens types for my specific needs. It was very efficient but very individualized care!

The Staff was very friendly and professional. The sign in went smoothly. My appointment was at ... 1:30 p.m. and I got there at 12:30 p.m. I used a Medical Transportation System and that's why I arrived so early.
